John Muir Award Scotland Education Report for the 2017-18 academic year

This annual summary includes details of John Muir Award activity with schools per local authority and residential activity.

During 2017-2018:

  • 487 schools were involved in delivering the John Muir Award in Scotland (40 more than 2016-17) – this includes 43% of Secondary Schools, 16% of Primary Schools and 5% of Special Schools.
  • 17,529 John Muir Awards were achieved by pupils and staff (6% increase on 2016-17).
  • One in five John Muir Awards were achieved in schools by pupils experiencing disadvantage.

Curriculum for Excellence and the John Muir Award – updated with examples of john Muir Award in action and information on how it can help meet school priorities such as: raising attainment for all, inclusion and equity, literacy and numeracy, health and well-being, employability and learning for sustainability.

Literacy and Nature Resource Guide – includes literacy resources for all ages with a natural theme or specially adapted for the outdoors, along with Award-specific resources and examples.

Inclusion, Wild Places & the John Muir Award publication has been updated and expanded to showcase the range of ways inclusion organisations are getting involved in the John Muir Award. You can find refreshed examples of the Award in action and read about how the Award links with national policy and initiatives, including health and wellbeing, education, employability, children and families, environment and social action.
