SAPOE Committee

Gordon Smith

Gordon is Chair on the SAPOE committee, and Outdoor Education Officer for Scottish Borders Council.  He is responsible for the Duke of Edinburgh Award in the region, managing and developing the Outdoor Learning delivery, overseeing the Educational Excursions policy and development, as well as the management of various outdoor facilities including Whiteadder Watersports Centre.

Tim Pickering

Tim works for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) as the Outdoor Learning Manager, he job shares with Isi Oakley and they share their position of vice chair on the SAPOE committee. They are responsible for the development of the support and delivery Outdoor Learning in Education Department and across the wider council.

Willie White

Willie works for East Ayrshire Council Educational and Social Services Department. He is the Education Officer for Outdoors and Sustainable Development with responsibility for strategic and operational support for the Directorate, Early Years, Schools, Community Learning and Development, Social Work on outdoor, sustainable development, eco schools, global citizenship, international learning and off site visits. Willie is a Vice Chair for SAPOE.

Derek Napier

Derek is the Outdoor Learning Manager for Leisure and Culture Dundee. He oversees Outdoor Learning in Dundee, including the safety management of offsite visits and adventure activities including DofE. Derek is RYA principal at Grassy Beach Sailing Centre and oversees the delivery of RYA courses and leads a team of instructors some of which are NGB tutors in variety of land and water based adventure activities. His main base is Ancrum Outdoor Education Centre in the heart of Dundee which is a non residential Centre and he manages a number of satellite facilities across the City including Clatto Watersport Centre. Derek is the Secretary for SAPOE.

Liz Brookes

Liz works for East Lothian Council as the Principal Teacher for the Outdoor Learning Service. She is responsible for managing and developing the Outdoor Learning Service. The service uses the outdoor environment and adventurous activities as a vehicle for delivering the Curriculum for Excellence across all schools in East Lothian. Liz is also responsible for the safety management of off site visits including adventure activities across the authority and overseas, and the management of Innerwick residential centre. Liz is the Training Coordinator for SAPOE.

Alan Smith

Alan is Treasurer on the SAPOE committee, and Outdoor Education and Awards Officer for East Dunbartonshire Council. He is responsible for managing the Educational Excursions within the authority, operational support to early years, schools and CLD, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, development of awards and courses to schools, as well as the management of the delivery of various outdoor programmes within the authority.
